In the thick layer of Assumptions and Generalizations the actual communication gets lost , and
we wonder why we didn’t get what we were expecting.
There’s this powerful tool , you use it , you will always get you want.
Am I joking ? No, I’m not .
There two skills one must master in any area where he wants be amazingly successful ,
These two skills are ,
1) Ability to define Exactly , Precisely what he want
2) Creating a practical way to achieve those.
I guess , in school you must have done science experiments in practical lab. In those practical experiments , have you ever heard
sentence like this
” Get some NaCl ”
or ” Get some NaOH”
Never …
There always use to be Precise Scale , measurements , and Precise steps
Heat for 2 minutes
Drop 1mm NaOH in 1gm NaCl
What that has to do with precision?
And what precision has to do with Career in Animation.
Actually everything 🙂
If you are asking help , animating scene , creating character , modeling character , doing assignment , you want to direct animation short , rig a character , or do virtually anything
YOU MUST DEFINE IT PRECISELY.
It not only gets rid of Generalizations and Assumptions but it also gives you exact vision how you want something and also others to help you the way you need.
Defining PRECISELY
“The Problem”
“Goal”
“Situation”
“Help”
“Outcomes”
” Feedback
“Idea”
“Vision
is skill.
And as any other skill it also comes with practice.
See when you define it precisely what it is that you Want , you have no communication barrier between you and others.
They exactly understand what you want.
Remember the example of ” Animate a scene where Kid is happy”
Or ” How to improve animation skills?”
Instead saying that we need to Define what exactly we are looking for acting scene , body mechanics , and there will be even more details , in Acting scene , what exactly we are looking for.
THE MORE CLEAR WE ARE THE MORE ARE CHANCES OF ACHIEVING WHAT WE WANT.
We don’t want to ask General .
See the other person, the professional incredible guy (Animator , Modeler .. ) , they always have the answer for anything we can possibly ask , but if you are providing general information about your want , where do they will begin ,
again they will have to Assume , Generalize.
Not because they Assume or Generalize , but asking general we didn’t leave much of choice for them.
Poor leaders always Assume and Generalize ,and they have no clear idea what they are looking for, just general description.
On the other hand,
Outstanding leaders , always have Precise vision in the mind and they communicate it to all exactly and precisely what they want.
Their instructions are Precise and Exact.
We want to be that guy , who Precisely defines and communicates what we want.
Had this happened to you ..
You met a guy ,who was really enthusiastic , really nice .
Came for help , and you wanted to help.
But he was confused himself that what exactly he’s looking for and finally he ended up asking general questions and left .
You felt bad ,because you knew you could have definitely help him, if he would have defined what exactly he want.
See that guy could be us asking help for our career in Animation or some animation advice from some legendary animation Ninja.
We are really nice , enthusiastic , we are passionate and we have good intentions, but we have no clear , precise , idea of what
exactly we want.
So we must need to get this habit in the blood stream of defining exactly and precisely what we want, what our vision is.
In terms of
How much ?
How far?
How exactly it works ?
What exactly it includes?
This will not only help us in animation career but every area of our life.
See surgeons , architects , carpenters they have to do job precisely.
If you see when furniture is built , how precisely they work , even 1mm creates huge difference.
We too have to care about tiniest detail if we dream to be outstanding.
So here is the Precision Tool
1. Always make sure you are “defining” exactly and precisely what we want.
2. Is it specific enough
in terms of
Time
Scale
Specialization
How much ?
What exactly?
How far? How long?
3. If its not specific
Break it down
Asking questions
What’s my outcome?
What exactly i expect?
Is it specific?
Can it be even more specific?
How can i break it down so that it would be easier to communicate?
What i have to include in order to make it even more specific and Clear? Example, Picture, Drawing, Words, attributes, Information.
4. If others are not Precise help them to break it down to more precise , specific
